What Do We Need to Do to Acquire Qi?

So where do we acquire Qi? Mainly from "Zhan Zhuang" (AKA holding the ball). Zhan means to stand and Zhuang means a stake. Therefore Zhan Zhuang literally means to stand like a stake. There are several forms of Zhan Zhuang.

The first is called "Wu Ji Zhuang". We should know this exercise although we don’t practice it. Wu Ji here means neutral or original. It is the original state of nothingness from which the universe starts forming according to the Yin and Yang theory. Its opposite is Tai Ji, where the two opposite sides (Yin and Yang) have formed from. Therefore Wu Ji Zhuang is the mother of all Zhuang. At our holding ball posture, we drop and let our arms to naturally hang at both sides of our body, you have a Wu Ji Zhuang. This Zhuang is very important for Qi Kong practitioners. The reason we don’t practice it is because it doesn’t development “Peng Jin” with our arms down.

The second and to us the most important is called “Hun Yuang Zhuang.” Hun here means whole/full/through expansion with Yuan meaning round/circular. These two Chinese words precisely and completely describe the way the Zhuang should be practiced. Huang Yuan Zhuang cultivates, nurtures and develops the “Peng Jin". The acquisition of Qi is one of its by-products which is not important for Tai Chi training. The loosening of our body is one of the things through which “Peng Jin” is developed.

The next is called “Cheng Zhuang” (Cheng meaning to stretch). We call it the lobster Zhuang. This Zhuang is the foundation of all kinds of Fa Jin (external release of internal energy).

The last is “Cat Zhuang”. It aim is to strengthen our legs and Yiao Kua (hip and waist area). This is part of the foundation of Fa Jin training.
