Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why do you call it Tai Chi Kung Fu?

A: Although the term Kung Fu can refer to a specific style of martial art, Wushu for example, it can also be said that Kung Fu is a term for skill obtained through practice regardless of the focus. For example, a professional baseball player would have baseball Kung Fu, a five star chef would have cooking Kung Fu. This is a very simplified definition but fits well in the Chinese martial arts context. Someone with Tai Chi Kung Fu would be considered well skilled in Chinese martial arts (Tai Chi).

Tai Chi, at least in an American sense, is largely thought of as exercise for senior citizens. While this does hold true in many instances (even in China) Tai Chi is actually the traditional Chinese martial art. Tai Chi myths and misconceptions are well documented in this article and Tai Chi as a whole is defined in even greater detail here.

Q: How long will it take to become proficient in Tai Chi?

A: A lifetime...seriously. Practicing your Tai Chi should become a part of your everyday life. For busy people living in a modern society this can present a challenge. Does this mean that you should look into another martial art? Not necessarily, but you should know that you will only get out what exactly what you put into it. More importantly, without faithful daily practice there are some concepts and skills you will simply never acquire. Any instructor who promises regular marked achievement for everyone involved without regard for physical limitations, practice time or other factors should be reconsidered closely.

Q: Do I need a uniform?

A: Probably not during the free trial period but full time students are required to purchase uniform pants at a minimum. These are available in house and are priced very reasonably. Full traditional Tai Chi uniforms are always available in 100% silk and less expensive synthetic/cotton blends. Currently John is working on an official school logo to put on t-shirts completing a more casual uniform.

Q: What belt rank do I start at?

A: There are no belt ranks at Seacoast Tai Chi Kung Fu. While some schools have adopted this practice for the sake of the students, Chinese martial arts traditionally do not. Historically there were no belt or color rank systems of any kind for any martial art until about a century ago.

Q: How much do classes cost?

A: New students receive one month of free Tai Chi instruction. Each month thereafter will be billed at $120 which includes all Tai Chi classes. For all other classes please contact us for the currentĀ tuitionĀ pricing.
